PQR/WPS Preparation

Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) Preparation:

Welding Procedure Specification (WPS):

A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a critical document that outlines the procedures and parameters for welding operations. It provides detailed guidance on welding variables to ensure that the welds meet the required quality and mechanical properties. Each WPS is tailored to specific material alloys and welding techniques, and it is developed based on relevant codes and engineering standards.

The WPS is designed to standardize welding practices, ensuring that welders consistently use accepted procedures to achieve reliable and high-quality welds. It serves as a comprehensive guide for achieving repeatable and trusted welding results.

Procedure Qualification Record (PQR):

A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) documents the welding data used to create a test coupon. The PQR demonstrates that the welding process produces welds with the correct mechanical and metallurgical properties. It is an essential component in validating the effectiveness of the WPS.

PQR/WPS Preparation Process:

  1. Develop a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS):
Create a detailed WPS based on industry standards such as ASME Sec IX, ISO 15609, or AWS D1.1. This document outlines the welding parameters and procedures to be used.

  2. Conduct Welding and Inspection:
Weld a test piece following the specifications outlined in the WPS. A certified welding inspector, such as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), witnesses the welding process and records the welding data, including current settings and pre-heat conditions.

  3. Perform Testing:
The test piece undergoes both Destructive Testing (DT) and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), including radiographic and mechanical tests, as specified by the welding procedure standard. These tests are conducted in a qualified laboratory, with the Inspection Body potentially witnessing the tests and reviewing radiographs.

  4. Document and Endorse:
If the test results are successful, complete the necessary documentation. The test body’s surveyor reviews, signs, and endorses the documents, validating the procedure.
